Early Spring Sturgeon Fishing On the Snake River

During early spring we fish the Snake River in Hells Canyon 27 mi south of Lewiston and Clarkston for giant white sturgeon. White sturgeon is unique to only a few areas in the Pacific Northwest and Canada they are the largest freshwater fish on the planet.

Sturgeon can grow well over 10 ft, weigh over 500 lb. and can be a hundred years old.  In fisherman magazine they voted that white sturgeon one of the top 10 fish to catch on the planet. This is a catch and release fishery. We use 200 lb. line a fighting belt and must navigate around rocks and sometimes through rapids to land these hard fighting high flying jumpers.

Early Spring through September is the best time of year to target these monster fish. In the Spring they’re just waking up from their wintertime slumber and are eager to feed. We find the biggest fish always come early in the spring.  Most of the fish will range from 5 to 10 ft with the average size being seven feet.

It is not uncommon to land five of these giants in one day. With Hells Canyon as your backdrop and the springtime mountains covered in lush green grass. The scenery is impeccable, and we work about 10 miles of river fishing various holes. Sometimes you are parked at a beach, other times you are anchored.  We mix in some bass and catfish fishing this is an 8-hour trip we provide poles bait tackle and cook hot lunch.
